Budget

Gregory C. Harrell, Clerk of Court and Comptroller, serves as the Budget Officer for the Marion County Board of County Commissioners. The Budget Office of the Clerk of Court and Comptroller carries out the duties of preparing the County’s proposed annual budget, presenting it to the Board of County Commissioners, and facilitating the budget process. The annual budget process culminates in the adoption of ad valorem tax millage rates and the adoption of an annual budget.

The budget of the Board of County Commissioners includes funding for the operations of County Commission departments as well as funding for the operations of the County’s Constitutional Officers; the Clerk of Court and Comptroller, Property Appraiser, Sheriff, Supervisor of Elections, and Tax Collector. Additionally the County budget includes funding for a variety of other services including among others, the County Health Unit and the costs associated with criminal prosecutions.

The Board of County Commissioners is also responsible for the funding of Municipal Service Taxing Units which provide services within specified areas of the County that exist outside City limits. It is important to note that the Board of County Commissioners is not responsible or authorized to fund the County School System, Municipalities, or Water Districts that exist in Marion County. These entities are separately funded and are the responsibility of other governing boards.
