As of October 1, 2019, wireless communications devices can only be used in a hands-free manner when driving in a designated school crossing, school zone, or active work zone area. The law provides for enforcement only by a warning for this section from October 1, 2019 through December 31, 2019, providing drivers with additional education of the new law.

FLHSMV is continuing to lead the Put It Down: Focus on Driving campaign to ensure all motorists are aware of the new Wireless Communications While Driving Law. The law went into effect on July 1, 2019, in which motorists may be stopped by a law enforcement officer for texting and driving. The Office of Communications, in conjunction with program areas, partners and stakeholders, will continue spreading the messages through earned and social media channels, as well as community outreach and press events.
